The UAE Golden Visa, officially referred to by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) as Golden Residency, provides eligible individuals with long-term residence in the UAE. Depending on the qualifying category, Golden Residency may be issued for five or ten years and is renewable subject to the applicable requirements.
Understanding UAE Golden Residency
The UAE Golden Residency programme is designed for eligible investors, entrepreneurs, exceptional talents and specialised professionals, outstanding students and graduates, humanitarian pioneers and frontline heroes.
It allows qualifying individuals to live, work, study and invest in the UAE without requiring a sponsor. Eligible holders can also obtain residence permits for qualifying family members in accordance with the applicable requirements.
1. Investors
Golden Residency is available to qualifying investors in public investments and real estate.
According to the current ICP Golden Residency Guide, public-investment residency may be granted for 10 years, while qualifying real-estate investors may receive a 5-year residency.
The current guide identifies an investment threshold of AED 2 million, subject to the specific requirements and supporting documentation applicable to the relevant investor category.
2. Entrepreneurs
Entrepreneurs with qualifying innovative, technology-based or future-oriented projects may be eligible for a 5-year Golden Residency.
The application requires supporting evidence concerning the project and approval or confirmation from the relevant authority or an accredited business incubator. ICP's current guidance also lists an auditor's confirmation that the project value is at least AED 500,000 among the required documents for this category.
3. Exceptional Talents and Specialized Expertise
The Golden Residency programme also covers a range of exceptional talents and specialised professionals.
Current ICP guidance includes categories such as doctors, scientists, inventors, creative professionals in culture and the arts, executive directors, athletes, PhD holders and specialists in priority scientific and engineering fields.
Requirements vary substantially by profession and may include recommendation or accreditation letters, recognized educational qualifications, professional experience, employment documentation or other evidence specific to the applicant's category.
4. Outstanding Students
Outstanding high-school and university students may also qualify for Golden Residency.
ICP currently lists a 5-year residency for qualifying outstanding high-school students and a 10-year residency for qualifying university students.
Academic achievement, recommendations, accredited qualifications and other category-specific conditions apply.

5. Humanitarian Pioneers
Individuals who have made significant contributions to humanitarian work may qualify for Golden Residency under the applicable criteria.
This category can include members of international or regional charitable organisations, recognised volunteers and other individuals with distinguished humanitarian contributions. Supporting evidence and recommendations from the relevant authorities may be required.
6. Frontline Heroes
Frontline workers who have demonstrated exceptional efforts during crises may also be considered for Golden Residency.
Eligibility is subject to the applicable requirements and recommendations from the competent authorities.
Golden Visa Requirements Depend on the Category
There is no single document checklist that applies to every Golden Visa applicant.
The required documents depend on the qualifying category and may include passports, photographs, proof of investment or property ownership, educational qualifications, employment documents, professional licences, salary evidence, recommendation letters, accreditation documents or other supporting evidence.
Applicants should therefore confirm the requirements for their specific category before preparing or submitting an application.
Golden Visa Application Process
The exact process depends on the applicant's category and circumstances, but generally involves:
Identifying the appropriate Golden Residency category.
Checking the applicable eligibility requirements.
Preparing the required supporting documents.
Obtaining any required recommendations, nominations or approvals.
Submitting the application through the relevant UAE authority.
Completing subsequent residence, identity and related procedures where applicable.
Approval remains subject to assessment by the relevant UAE authorities.
Important Before Applying
Golden Visa eligibility should be assessed against the applicant's actual circumstances rather than advertisements or general claims about eligibility.
Requirements can differ significantly between investors, entrepreneurs, professionals, students and other categories. Applicants should also verify current requirements because residency regulations, procedures and supporting-document requirements may change.
